Sanur is often described as Bali’s quieter seaside town, a place where traditional charm meets modern convenience. Unlike the busier areas of Kuta or Seminyak, Sanur has a slower pace, calm beaches, and a family-friendly atmosphere. When I stayed here, I realized that Sanur is perfect for travelers who want to enjoy Bali without the constant crowds. Here are the top things I recommend doing in Sanur to make the most of your visit.

1. Stroll or Cycle Along the Sanur Beach Promenade

Sanur is home to Bali’s longest beachfront path, stretching about 5 kilometers. Walking or renting a bicycle here in the morning is one of the best ways to experience the town. The promenade passes through small cafes, traditional fishing boats, and quiet sandy stretches. Sunrise views are especially stunning on this side of the island.

2. Enjoy Water Sports in Calm Waters

The sea in Sanur is protected by an offshore reef, making the water calmer than in many other parts of Bali. This makes it ideal for activities such as:

  • Stand-up paddleboarding
  • Kite surfing (Sanur is one of Bali’s top spots for this, especially in July–August)
  • Snorkeling near the reef
  • Kayaking in the shallow waters

Most beachfront hotels and independent operators rent equipment or arrange lessons.

3. Visit Le Mayeur Museum

Sanur isn’t just about the beach. The Le Mayeur Museum, once the home of Belgian painter Adrien-Jean Le Mayeur, showcases his work and life with his Balinese wife, Ni Pollok. The museum itself is a piece of art, set in a traditional Balinese-style house with ocean views. It offers a mix of cultural insight and history that’s worth exploring.

4. Experience Sanur’s Markets

The Sindhu Night Market is the most popular spot for local food. It comes alive in the evening with stalls selling satay, nasi goreng, mie goreng, and fresh fruit juices at very affordable prices. During the day, Sindhu Traditional Market is a good place to shop for fresh produce, flowers, and everyday items used by locals. Visiting both markets gives you a glimpse into Sanur’s community life.

5. Relax on Sanur Beach

Sanur’s beach is not as crowded as those in Seminyak or Kuta, and the vibe is more relaxed. The sand is soft, the waves are gentle, and there are plenty of sun loungers available for rent. I found it perfect for reading a book, swimming, or simply watching the traditional jukung fishing boats anchored along the shore.

6. Take a Day Trip to Nusa Islands

Sanur is one of the main departure points for fast boats to Nusa Lembongan, Nusa Ceningan, and Nusa Penida. These islands are known for their dramatic cliffs, snorkeling spots, and white sandy beaches. The convenience of catching a boat directly from Sanur makes it easy to plan a day trip or even an overnight stay.

7. Try Local Cafes and Restaurants

Sanur has a growing café scene, with many places offering excellent coffee, brunch, and healthy food. Some of my favorites include beachfront spots where you can enjoy breakfast while watching the sunrise. For traditional Balinese dishes, small warungs around town are the best option, affordable, authentic, and full of flavor.

8. Visit Bali Orchid Garden

Located just outside Sanur, the Bali Orchid Garden is a peaceful stop for plant lovers. The garden showcases different orchid species as well as other tropical plants, making it a quiet break from the beach. Guided tours are available for those interested in learning more about Indonesia’s flora.

9. Join a Yoga or Wellness Class

Sanur has several yoga studios and wellness centers, offering classes ranging from traditional Hatha yoga to modern flow styles. Some resorts also provide spa treatments and Balinese massages. For travelers looking to relax and recharge, this is one of the highlights of staying in Sanur.

Final Thoughts

Sanur may not have the nightlife of Seminyak or the cliffs of Uluwatu, but its charm lies in its calm and balance. From sunrise walks along the promenade to day trips to the Nusa Islands, there’s plenty to do here without the rush. For me, Sanur felt like the perfect base to enjoy Bali at a slower, more thoughtful pace. If you are looking for more laid-back vibes, less busy, but still have many options for cafe hopping and fun things to do, Sanur might be the right place to go, especially with kids and family. Hope you enjoy your trip in Sanur as much as I do!
